BETON, N. J. (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first drug to treat erectile dysfunction in the U. S. The drug is the first approved for treatment of impotence in men.
The drug is Eli Lilly’s first for male impotence, the agency said.
Dr. Anthony F. Fagan, the acting director of the agency’s Office of Disease Prevention and Control, said he has not seen a single man who has been prescribed the drug since late 2017. The drug, known generically as sildenafil, works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps a man get and keep an erection.
Lilly, based in Indianapolis, is the latest in a series of drugs that the agency is pushing out to treat erectile dysfunction.
The drug is also a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, which affects women of reproductive age, Fagan said.
“We know that there are many men who have been diagnosed with BPH and we know that there are many more men who are going through this,” he said.
The drug will be available through a prescription only. Lilly said the drug is expected to be approved for use among more than 60 million men in the U. and in Europe, where its sales have been booming. In France, sales of sildenafil have been falling because of a shortage of Viagra.
Lilly is pushing for more aggressive drug regulation of drugs, including the one that treats erectile dysfunction in men.
“We’re not a pharmaceutical company, we’re a health care company,” Fagan said.
In addition to the drug approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction, Eli Lilly and Co. have already approved a class of drugs called selective phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, or PDE-5Is, Fagan said.
He said the U. Food and Drug Administration has already approved one class of drugs called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, including Cialis, which treats erectile dysfunction.
“I think there’s a lot of concern about the impact on the U. healthcare system,” Fagan said. He said the FDA has not approved a drug that could treat erectile dysfunction in men. “But it will be an important drug to treat men with erectile dysfunction.”
In the U. S., the first drug to be approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction was approved in 2003 for use among more than one million men in the U. S., Fagan said.
The U. Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra’s approval in 1998 for use among more than 1 million men in the U. Viagra is already the first drug to be approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug was approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction in the U. in 2013, Fagan said. Viagra and Cialis were approved for use in the United States in the early 2000s, and Cialis in 2004.
Lilly has been pushing for more aggressive drug regulation of some erectile dysfunction drugs, including the one that treats erectile dysfunction in men.
“I think the U. healthcare system is going through a period of increased pressure on our ability to have an effective treatment of erectile dysfunction,” Fagan said.
The FDA has said it is working on the first drug to treat erectile dysfunction, including the one that treats benign prostatic hyperplasia, which affects women of reproductive age.
The drug will be available in the U. through the end of June.
In addition to Viagra, the drug has been approved for use in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
In addition to Cialis, the U. has also approved another drug called Revatio, which treats erectile dysfunction in men. The drug is approved for use in the United States and Europe in December.
